LVHN Chosen to Be Exclusive Health Care Provider for Valley Preferred Cycling Center
Partnership to provide new emphasis on healthier, more active youth and more
Lehigh Valley, Pa. (Mar. 11, 2015) – Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) was recently chosen to become the new exclusive health care provider of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. With this new partnership, LVHN will provide medical direction on-site at the cycling center and train junior, elite, and professional athletes at LVHN One City Center in downtown Allentown, Pa.
As another part of the partnership LVHN will work with the Valley Preferred Cycling Center to create a youth cycling initiative aimed at improving the health and education of Allentown children.
The youth cycling initiative, called the Gear Up Academy, will be developed by Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s President, CEO and Olympic gold-medalist Marty Nothstein, with guidance from LVHN’s sports medicine team. LVHN also will provide training space for program participants at One City Center. Going beyond cycling, Gear Up Academy participants will receive additional coaching on proper health and wellness from other areas within LVHN.
“The creation of the Gear Up Academy is going to help propel the Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s already exciting world class community programs,” said Nothstein. “To be able to create a program that will introduce kids to an active lifestyle through the use of a bicycle, is a dream come true for me. We can finally take our programs to the people instead of the people coming to participate in our programs.”
But the partnership with the Valley Preferred Cycling Center goes much further than the creation of the Gear Up Academy. The athletes and competitors who train at the cycling center will be given access to LVHN’s sports medicine destination facility and fitness programs at One City Center for biomechanical and physiological testing. This includes an upgraded sports performance suite on the fourth floor of One City Center that now has the only Wattbikes anywhere on this side of the Mississippi River. The Wattbike was developed in partnership with British Cycling, and is designed to feel like riding a real bike and provides scientifically accurate training data.
Another added benefit of the partnership is a new medical director of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, orthopedic surgeon Neal Stansbury, MD. As the official medical director, Stansbury and other LVHN sports medicine providers and athletic trainers will staff all Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s World Series of Bicycling events.
“As an avid cyclist myself, I’m truly looking forward to working with the Valley Preferred Cycling Center to provide an even better experience for their competitors,” said Stansbury. “With the addition of the Wattbikes at One City Center, I believe the cycling center truly will be the go to destination for cycling performance.”
“When Valley Preferred became the naming sponsor of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in 2007, we saw not only a world-class athletics venue but also an organization that shared our passion for community health," said Jack A. Lenhart, M.D., executive director of Valley Preferred. “This new partnership with Lehigh Valley Health Network, along with the leadership of Marty Nothstein and Dr. Stansbury, will provide the Cycling Center with enhanced sports medicine resources and the opportunity to further engage our region’s youth in healthier lifestyles. These are all key elements in bringing us one step closer to our mutual mission: a future of wellness for our community.”
Brian Nester, DO, MBA, LVHN’s president and CEO said this partnership is a good fit for the network’s mission. “Whether they are elite athletes training with former Olympians, or underserved youth who need more direction and a safe place to learn and exercise, our mission is to heal comfort and care for everyone in our community,” says Nester. “This partnership with the Valley Preferred Cycling Center gives us a unique opportunity to go beyond the traditional hospital setting to actively engage our community to be better and challenge them to lead healthier, productive lives.”
