Choosing Wisely is an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation. According to its website, the Choosing Wisely Initiative aims to promote conversations between clinicians and patients by helping patients choose care that is:
- Supported by evidence
- Not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received
- Free from harm
- Truly necessary
To accomplish this, the Choosing Wisely website offers lists of “Things Providers and Patients Should Question,” representing recommendations from leading medical specialty societies. Consumer Reports has translated the recommendations into valuable patient-friendly materials, free and ready for distribution. Communication education modules and video resources are available to help health care providers engage patients in the conversation. Lehigh Valley Physician Hospital Organization/Valley Preferred promotes communal review of Choosing Wisely lists among peer providers and encourages the use of Choosing Wisely handouts as a patient communication tool.
Choosing Wisely TLC Learning Modules
Online education modules, which offer the opportunity to review evidence-based medicine, are accessible to LVPHO member physicians. By completing the modules, physicians earn AMA PRA Category Credit, and may qualify for Patient Safety/Risk Management CME. For TLC access instructions, click here.
